On Saturday, November 6, the Toms River South Freshman Cross Country team ran in the Shore Conference meet. The varsity team was absent from this race because Coach O'Leary felt that it was in the team's best interest to take it off before next week's Group III championship race. The freshman made themselves noticed however. With a second place team finish, only behind CBA, this is possibly one of the best freshman teams ever to grace the South uniform. Leading the way for the Indians was Eddie Baynes running a blazing 10:38 on the Ocean County Park course. This was good enough for a first place finish and the school record. Eddie outlasted his competition by more than 30 seconds. South's second runner, another standout, was Troy Bauer. Troy's 11:28 gave him 8th place and an improvement of almost a minute on his previous best at this course. Third man for the day is the other freshman standout, Patrick Clancy. His 11:48 gave him a 17th place. Doug Janowicz stepped up and became South's 4th man, while Clay Johnson rounded out the scoring, with Billy Raleigh close behind.
